I am moving across the country, do I need to do anything?

Direct deposit travels with you. Paper checks and Direct Express need an address update. Here is the exact checklist.

Direct deposit: no action needed

If your benefits go directly to your bank or credit union, you do not need to update SSA when you move. The deposit follows your account. The only address SSA strictly needs updated is your mailing address for 1099s, COLA notices, and Medicare correspondence.

Direct Express: update your address

The card itself follows you, but Comerica needs your address for replacement cards and statements. Call 1-888-741-1115 or update in the Direct Express app within 30 days of moving.

Paper checks: definitely update

USPS forwards first-class mail for 12 months, but federal checks are often returned to sender instead of forwarded. Update your address with SSA before you move.

How to update your address

  1. Sign in to ssa.gov/myaccount
  2. Choose Personal Info, then Update Mailing Address
  3. Enter the new address; effective date is today

You can also call 1-800-772-1213 or visit a field office.

State-tax considerations

Twelve states tax Social Security at the state level. Moving across a state line (e.g., out of Colorado into Wyoming, or out of Connecticut into Florida) can save 3-6 percent on your benefit. Notify your former state's department of revenue of your residency change to avoid double-state-tax filings.
