How Social Security pays you in 2026

The Social Security Administration runs four separate payment schedules. Knowing which one applies to you is the difference between waiting a week and waiting a day.

Title II

Retirement, SSDI, Survivors

Paid on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Wednesday of every month, depending on your date of birth (1-10, 11-20, or 21-31). The same Wednesday number, every single month.

Title XVI

SSI (Supplemental Security Income)

Paid on the 1st of each month. When the 1st lands on a weekend or federal holiday, payment shifts to the prior business day. That means SSI sometimes lands twice in one calendar month.

Grandfathered

Pre-May-1997 recipients

If you started receiving Social Security before May 1997, you stayed on the older single-date schedule: the 3rd of every month, with weekend/holiday roll-back to Friday.

Reality check

When you actually see the money

Direct deposits post any time between midnight and 9 AM on your scheduled date. Direct Express cards typically load just after midnight. Paper checks add 3 to 5 business days for mail delivery.

Common questions about 2026 payment dates

Answers verified against SSA's published schedule, the Federal Reserve bank-holiday calendar, and the 2026 COLA notice.

When will I get my Social Security check in May 2026?
If your birthday is on the 1st through the 10th, your May 2026 check arrives on Wednesday, May 13. Birthdays 11-20 get paid Wednesday, May 20. Birthdays 21-31 get paid Wednesday, May 27. SSI recipients were paid Friday, May 1. Pre-May-1997 retirees were also paid Friday, May 1 (since May 3 fell on a Sunday).
Why are Social Security payments split across four different Wednesdays?
The Social Security Administration started staggering Title II benefit payments in 1997 to reduce processing load and customer service spikes. Splitting deposits across the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Wednesday of each month spreads bank traffic and call volume. The 1st Wednesday is reserved for SSI, and the 3rd of the month is reserved for retirees who were on the rolls before May 1997 (they got grandfathered into the older single-date schedule).
What time does Social Security deposit money?
Direct deposits typically post to your bank account at 12:01 AM local time on your scheduled payment date, but some banks credit funds anywhere from midnight to 9 AM. If your benefits arrive on a debit card (Direct Express), funds are usually available right after midnight. Paper checks take 3 to 5 business days longer than direct deposit.
Do Social Security payments come early if the date falls on a weekend or holiday?
For SSI and pre-1997 retirees, yes, if the 1st (SSI) or 3rd (pre-1997) lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, payment moves to the prior business day. For everyone else, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Wednesday schedule does not shift, because federal holidays almost never fall on a Wednesday in the U.S. Calendar.
Does SSI come twice in one month?
Yes, twice each calendar year. SSI pays on the 1st, so when the 1st falls on a weekend, you get the next month's SSI deposit on the last business day of the prior month. That makes it look like you got two SSI checks in one month. In 2026, this happens in January (Jan 2 covers January, Jan 30 covers February), at the end of October (Oct 30 for November), and end of December (Dec 31 for January 2027). Your annual total does not change.
Will my Social Security check arrive on the next federal holiday?
Federal holidays in 2026 (New Year's Day, MLK Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas) do not move Wednesday Title II payments since none fall on a Wednesday this year. Veterans Day 2026 is Wednesday, November 11, SSA still processes deposits that day. SSI and pre-1997 dates may shift earlier if a holiday lands on the 1st or 3rd.
How much is the average Social Security retirement check in 2026?
After the 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment that took effect January 2026, the average retired worker benefit is approximately $1,976 per month, the average SSDI benefit is about $1,580 per month, and the maximum federal SSI payment is $967 for an individual and $1,450 for a couple. Your actual amount depends on your earnings history and the age you claimed benefits.
How do I switch from a paper check to direct deposit?
Sign in to your my Social Security account at ssa.gov/myaccount, choose Benefits & Payment, and update your direct deposit information. You can also call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or visit your local field office. The change usually takes effect within one full pay cycle, so your next deposit may still come as a paper check.
What is Direct Express and how does it differ from a bank deposit?
Direct Express is a prepaid Mastercard debit card issued by Comerica Bank on behalf of the U.S. Treasury for federal benefit recipients who do not have a bank account. Your Social Security or SSI benefit is loaded onto the card on your scheduled payment date. There are no monthly fees, but ATM withdrawals beyond your free monthly limit and certain other transactions carry small charges.
Can I get my Social Security check sooner if I have an emergency?
SSA does not release benefits early for personal emergencies. The agency does have an Expedited Reinstatement program for people whose disability benefits ended due to work and who can no longer work because of the same condition, that can restart benefits faster. For one-off cash hardship, SSA refers people to state assistance, local food banks, and Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) options.
What is the 2026 Social Security COLA?
The 2026 cost-of-living adjustment is 2.5%, announced by SSA in October 2025 and applied to January 2026 payments. The adjustment is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) measured during the third quarter of 2025. Your January deposit reflected the new amount automatically, no action required.
Will my Social Security benefit be taxed?
It depends on your combined income (adjusted gross income + nontaxable interest + half of your Social Security). If you file as an individual and combined income is between $25,000 and $34,000, up to 50% of your benefit is taxable; above $34,000, up to 85% is taxable. For joint filers the thresholds are $32,000 and $44,000. These thresholds have not been adjusted for inflation since 1984.
Is May 13, 2026 a federal holiday?
No. May 13, 2026 is a regular Wednesday. Memorial Day 2026 falls on Monday, May 25. SSA processes payments normally on May 13. The next federal holiday after May 13 is Memorial Day.
What happens if my Social Security payment is late?
Direct deposits are extremely reliable, but if a payment does not arrive by 3 business days after your scheduled date, contact your bank first to confirm it was not posted to a different account. If the bank has no record, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213. Paper checks may take longer through the mail, wait until at least 5 business days have passed before reporting them missing.
Why did my Social Security check change in January 2026?
Most likely reasons: (1) the 2.5% COLA increased your gross benefit, (2) your Medicare Part B premium increased to $185 for 2026 and is deducted before deposit, (3) IRMAA surcharges kicked in if your 2024 income crossed a threshold, or (4) you turned 65 and Medicare premiums started being deducted. Compare your December 2025 deposit to your January 2026 deposit line by line to see which factor moved your net.
How are Social Security survivors and disability payments scheduled?
SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) and survivors benefits follow the same Wednesday schedule as retirement benefits, based on the beneficiary's date of birth. Children who receive SSDI benefits use the date of birth of the wage earner whose record they receive on, not their own. SSI children use the SSI 1st-of-month schedule.
